1. Evolution: How the Katana Earned Its Curve
Early Japanese swords (imported or influenced by Chinese and Korean designs) were straight, double-edged, and meant for thrusting or chopping. However, as horse-mounted combat and fast-paced infantry battles evolved during the late Heian and Kamakura periods (1185–1333), soldiers needed a sword that could be drawn and swung in a single, fluid motion.

Folding & Purification: The smith repeatedly heats, hammers, and folds the steel to purify the metal and distribute carbon evenly throughout the blade.

Differential Hardening (Yaki-Ire): Before quenching, the blade is coated in a special clay mixture—thicker along the spine, thinner along the cutting edge. When plunged into water, the bare edge cools instantly (becoming extremely hard and sharp), while the insulated spine cools slowly (remaining flexible to absorb shocks). This process creates the iconic wavy line called the Hamon.
